Introduction

The FreOne Foundation aims to support enterprising people who are currently experiencing hard times due to sub-optimal life circumstances. The foundations approach is project oriented. At the moment the foundation is active in Kenya and Uganda.

Together we explore new ways, gain experience, collect and share information.

The foundation provides funds, equipment, knowledge and an internet based backbone aimed at working together remotely.

Projects

The activities of FreOne are always related to a well defined project. All participants of the foundation work together on projects of their choice.

FreOne strives to achieve positive financial results of the projects in its portfolio, so hopefully the beneficiaries of the foundation will be able to reach an independent acceptable standard of living given some time.

Often there is some form of synergy between seemingly unrelated projects. So project market will be used to provide project farming with market information and project art is used to generate material for both other projects.

Currently (April 2021) there are several projects in development. To mention a few:

  • Project Farming: probably the most ambitious of them all. Aimed to provide small scale farmers the means of growing their crops successfully.

Status: pilot projects performed during 2014 / 2016 (before the establishment of the foundation) and 2020, the next step depends on the results of Project BMS (see below).

  • Project Market: this project investigates how to collect market information that will be useful in planning farming activities.

Status: low activity.

  • Project Art: collects and creates several kinds of material that will be useful for promotional activities of the foundation or for use in other projects. The in house development of an Android app forms part of this project, the app will be used for promotional activites and to generate funding for the foundation.

Status: active, short break in some activities due to time constraints.

  • Project Python: provides information and code snippets regarding the versatile computer language Python. Those code snippets can be used to automate all kinds of tasks for the foundation and will be helpful for the support of other projects as well.

Status: active.

  • Project BMS: FreOne develops its own Business Management System. It consists of a network of computers, so called fat-clients that support the beneficiaries of the foundation by enabling effective cooperation and by providing information about a broad range of subjects. Each beneficiary receive the means (a laptop, phone, internet subscription and training) to use this network. The BMS is designed in such a way that it keeps functioning in case of internet disruptions. It’s up to the beneficiaries themselves how much effort they will invest in studying all the goodies that a modern computer has to offer (a Python course anyone?).

Note

Status: higly active, funding campaign initiated on 17 april 2021

  • Project Design: this project investigates what steps have to be taken in order to be able to design and produce consumables / goods in a durable way. What are the challenges and pitfalls? With emphasis on patent-free design and the creation of local self-employment opportunities.

Status: in concept phase.

Funding

Many foundations needs funding and FreOne is no exception. The goal of FreOne is to make most project spinoffs profitable for the beneficiaries in the long run, but this can take some time to achieve. So to get things started the foundation will campaign to raise funds so now and then.

A comprehensive list of projected costs will be made available for every stakeholder (meaning every participant, funder or interested party of the foundation) on request.

The Liberapay platform is specialized in enabling donations to creators of free content and non-profits. Of course don’t hesitate to send us an email if you would prefer another way to support the FreOne Foundation. Due to the project oriented approach that aims to generate an income for the beneficiaries and the agile nature of some projects we opted to not go for a so called AMBI-status, consequently gifts are not tax-deductible in the Netherlands.

Current Fundraising Campaign

FreOne develops its own Business Management System. Part of the support the foundation offers to all its beneficiaries consists of office equipment like computers and phones. The BMS is ready for its first deployment amongst some participants, we need three laptop computers to test it out.

Goal

3 laptops, for an estimated total of 2250 Euro / 2700 USD, campaign started 17 April 2021.
